Grade 9: Academy Lecture on SAT & ACT

In the Academy class of March 4, 9th graders were lectured about standardized tests. Two lecturers, Eric and Oliver, informed students about the advantages and disadvantages of the SAT and ACT.

Stepping into high school, 9th-grade students begin to learn more about the standardized tests that make up a significant part of their portfolio. Eric and Oliver analyzed the pros and cons of taking the SAT and ACT. Before that, though, they made clarifications for common misunderstandings regarding standardized tests. To name one, the SAT and ACT are equally prestigious: the college application offices do not value one over the other.

According to the lecturers, SAT and ACT have their pros and cons in different ways. The SAT, known for its difficulty in reading and language examinations, has more adequate time compared to the ACT. The SAT on math, on the other hand, is much easier than the ACT one which requires full comprehension of the given text in order to answer. The ACT also features an optional writing section and is scored differently compared to the SAT. Overall, the SAT and ACT are very different in their modes of testing.

Eric and Oliver advised that given such differences exist, it is important for students to understand their advantages in testing. If they are stronger at quickly answering questions in a short amount of time, then they should probably choose the ACT. If they can interpret a text thoroughly and understand its underlying message, then they should choose the SAT instead. Of course, taking both tests is also a good idea; but finding out their own strengths and weaknesses is equally as important - not only in finding which test is more suitable, but also training towards resolving these weaknesses.
