Grade 7: YD Class“Make SMART Goals”

February 26, 2021

During the first YD class, under the teachers’ guidance, the seventh graders used the helper “Planner” to think carefully and answer this question: How do you want to spend the new semester? After much discussion, they decided a “SMART” goal has to be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

How do you set specific goals? First, answer a few questions: “Who is involved? What do I want to accomplish? When is it going to happen? What constraints do you plan to use to achieve this? And why do you want to achieve this goal?”

Next, establish concrete criteria for measuring your progress toward attaining each goal you set; so that you can experience the joy of achievement that spurs you on to the continued effort required to reach your goal. Then, identify goals that are most important to you and figure out ways to make them possible. A relevant “goal” must represent an objective you are “willing” and “able” to attain. Generally, a crucial goal is frequently easier to reach than a small one because a lesser goal exerts lower motivation. Some of the hardest tasks to accomplish may seem easy, simply because they were something you cared about. Finally, anchor your goal within a timeframe. That will help you track the entire process and make timely reflections and adjustments.
