Online English Teaching Program from NHS Members

January 9, 2021

From October, 2020, members from the National Honor Society of SHSID chapter conducted “air” English classes to the children of primary schools in Henan and Hubei Province. Every week, two members would stay after school to teach the children.

The topics of the classes ranged from numbers, to fruits, animals, festivals, nature, shapes, colors and occupations. Each class focused on a topic closely related to daily life, allowing the children to learn to apply English phrases and sentences in real-life scenario.

Due to the special conditions under the Covid-19, all the classes were conducted online through the Tencent meeting room. This meant that members had to confront unpredictable issues like network latency and equipment flaws. So NHS members also prepared additional video courses to improve efficiency and not waste children’s time. In this case, children could learn new knowledge regardless of network problems.

At the end of the course in December, the members brought the last online English class to the fifth graders of a primary school in Henan Province. As the Christmas season approached, this lesson was designed to revolve around the theme of Christmas. Through listening to Christmas stories, learning to speak phrases used for Christmas, and singing a Christmas carol, the virtual classroom was filled with a lively and joyful atmosphere. After the class, the children also received special Christmas gifts—scarves, pens, notebooks, and Christmas cards.

The success of each class was inseparable from the early preparation done by NHS students, the coordination of teachers on both sides, and the cooperation from the lovely children. In the future, NHS members hope to enrich the content of the class as well as diversify the activities in class so that children will not only enjoy learning English but also eager to learn more on themselves.
