Grades 7&8: Future City Research Project Final Presentation
Approaching the final few days of 2020, Future City Research Project finally concluded their project and held a presentation. The teachers of this club invited the principal of Shanghai High School International Division’s Primary section, Mr. Liu, to listen to the club’s final presentation. Additionally, the teachers managed to invite Professor Fan from JiaoTong university and architectural designer Mr. Bai to critique and give constructive feedback to the student’s final models.
Since the beginning of the semester, the students were split into three groups to go on field research around Shanghai. The students focused on finding ways to the most feasible and effective solutions, finally creating a model of their solution. The first group that presented was Amelia from 8(3), Brady and Yoning from 8(6), and Momoka from 8(9). They created a model of a multifunctional parking lot for electronic bikes. The problem that led them to this idea of theirs was that the residents were leaving their bikes outside to charge, which caused the roads to be overcrowded as well as the fact that there are many exposed wires. The group observed the main reason was that there was not enough space for these people to park their bikes and charge, so they came up with a multifunctional parking area that allowed people to charge their bikes and socialize in the area. The second group was Jennifer and Ashley from 8(12) and Isabelle and Audrey from the seventh grade. They showed everyone a park where people could socialize and spend high-quality time with their friends and family. Their inspiration behind this idea was from interviewing some local inhabitants. They found out that their children would often come to visit but would not stay long and spend quality bonding time together. As a result, the group thought of a garden where people could enjoy their time together and communicate as a family. The last group was Koen from 8(1), Jason from 8(9), and David and Tony from the seventh grade. They brought a model of an open area shopping mall to the presentation. Their train of thought was that when they were asking the residents in the area about the neighboring communities, the people did not actually know much about each other. This caused the group to come up with a plan to create a shopping area in between the communities to allow the people of different neighborhoods to know and understand each other.
After an afternoon of applause and communication during this final presentation, the club is very excited for more innovative ideas to make this city a better place.
