Grade 11: The World of Coffee

December 23, 2020

On December 17, in Grade 11 classrooms, the students were surprised by the arrival of Hayden, from 11(5), who brought with him thoughts of steam and fragrant aromas, of bitter yet pleasant flavors, and of bustling cafes filled to the brim with working students.

Yes, he came with a presentation about the world of coffee, and his passion for each and every processing method, flavor, smell, bean, and more were evident in his speech. He first introduced to the audience his entrance into the world of coffee which started with a class he took in years past that introduced him to the chemical side of coffee and the science of its many different tastes and production techniques. After that, he continued his pursuit of the coffee-making arts and took up some extracurricular activities related to coffee, where he would eventually receive official certifications that verified his skill in the making of coffee. He demonstrated his knowledge of the different brewing equipment he owned and how they all had their own processes that produced different flavors, like cold brewing or French pressing. He then introduced the dozens of possible flavors contained within coffee and how each one could be generated by different molecules present in the drink, explaining the depth and complexity a single cup of coffee can really have.

To a crowd of cold students in winter, this presentation woke them right up and gave them a dose of knowledge for them to take on their way to class, reminding them that each experience they have in a day can have any number of interesting explanations. The next time they drink another cup of coffee, perhaps they will remember the presentation they saw and see the drink with a more nuanced perspective.
