Puxi Campus Grades 4&5: Reading Week—Reading is Your Passport to Adventure

December 5, 2020

During the action-packed week of November 30th - December 4th, Grades 4 and 5 celebrated their long-awaited reading week! “Reading is your passport to adventure!” was the motto upper primary took on this month! Students and staff participated in several immersive activities related to reading, with a cross-curricular focus on geography. These activities increased students’ literacy skills by engaging in story comprehension, finding facts and opinions, and much more!

The week started off with classes learning about the origins of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. The Disney version we know today has actually been modified several times from versions around the world. One of the earliest known versions of “Cinderella” actually originated in China! Students were put into groups to read about five different versions of the Cinderella story from China, India, Iraq, Kenya, and Egypt, respectively. Then students created a graphic organizer explaining how the stories are different in different regions of the world.

The week’s fun and learning continued with researching records set around the world! Students researched interesting facts from the popular Guinness World Records website and books. We even have a student at our very school in the 2015 Guinness World Records book! Fan Xin Lin from class 4(3) participated in a world record of the most contributions to a paint-by-numbers picture! There were 2,602 participants. As the week continued, students had to use an important reading skill, context clues, to discover where in the world their teacher had gone! Unbeknownst to students, teachers from Grades 4 and 5 switched places during English class, and students had to use their reading skills to find where in the world their teacher was based on the clues left behind.

Finally, we ended the week with the Storytelling Competition and a dress up day! 12 finalists from both grade levels competed for first place by reading stories they wrote in fun and interesting ways. The competitors worked diligently memorizing their stories and practiced each night before the competition. There was a special guest judge, Ms. Zhang, who is the host of an English TV channel. On Friday, students and staff dressed as well-known idioms and learned about several idioms used around the world! This was especially meaningful to students since there is a large focus in grades 4-5 of figurative language, its use, and understanding. Students got creative with their idiom costumes!

Overall, it was a successful reading week! Students can reflect on what they learned throughout the week by referring back to their “reading passports” that encouraged them to read several different genres as well as the world map in which students have recorded the many settings of books they’ve read. Grades 4 and 5 have renewed their love of reading, and sharpened their literacy skills! They look forward to working towards the next fun English event, whether it is a project-based assessment in English class, a new novel study, or reading for enjoyment!
