Grade 11: Make Xianmian Building More Beautiful

December 3, 2020

On November 26th, the juniors attended their weekly Assembly in the auditorium. They were greeted by a brightly colored presentation that brought with it a game of Never-Have-I-Ever.

In a push to keep the Xianmian Building clean and orderly, the ASB produced this game with specific topics for people to ponder during the game, all of which were related to their mindfulness with regards to their own waste created during lunch and how well they were doing in cleaning up with care. In the end, as the dust settled, only a handful of students were left standing, surviving the gauntlet and proving their commitments to cleanliness, and in the process, teaching a lesson to all of their seated peers.

This was not the end of the morning excitement, however, as there was still yet one more surprise for the students. A song, painstakingly worked on by the students of homeroom 11(2), was played to the audience. The music filled the room with melodies on the importance of cleaning up one’s messes, not just for one’s own sake, but for the sake of the community as a whole. Each stanza was crafted by a student to espouse the ideals that we should all live up to, namely that we should not leave messes behind for others to deal with and instead handle them ourselves first. It requires a collective interest and trust to keep the desks clean after lunch. When students recognize that they should not take clean desks for granted and see others put in the effort to clean up after themselves, everyone can pitch in to help. Each lyric of the song emphasized this idea, as they expressed the frustration of the students in having to come to class after lunch and clean desks lined with plastic and food drippings.

The jubilant cheers and claps from the crowd after the song was finished certainly gave hope to the idea that the students will keep these ideas close to their hearts and remember to clean up after themselves the next time they leave trash in the lunch rooms.
