Grade 6: Youth Development Class—Friendship

December 3, 2020

During this week’s Youth Development class, students and teachers discussed friendship and how to communicate effectively with friends.

The students watched several videos, examining different communications, passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive, and assertive. All students are having fun with it. The following activity was a gallery walk where the students read some situations and identified the type of communication used in different circumstances. There were 6 different situations all around the corners of the class. Students enjoyed walking around the classroom, sharing their own opinions, and discussing with friends what kind of communications were used in the texts and how can people improve their situation if they try another way of communication. Afterward, the teachers showed an episode of a TV show to examine further examples of the 4 types of communication through the different characters. While watching the TV show, there was a notes warrior competition. The student who took the best notes was awarded a note warrior badge to show what a great job they had done.

The Youth Development program is one of the most important school programs. We demonstrate what we learn in this program by our actions and communication to deepen our friendships. We should pay more attention to friendship and friends since it’s going to be a big part of our lives as teenagers.
