Grades 11-12: English Speech Competition
With winter approaching, the 11thand 12thgrade students of SHSID held their English Speech Competition in the Grand Auditorium on the afternoon of November 25th. Unlike previous years, this year’s contest was based on an open-ended topic: “Why We Should Care?” Contestants could choose their own subjects and convince the judges and the audience why they needed to care about the subject of the speech through the use of skillful rhetoric.
Before the competition began, the host teacher gave a demonstration speech. The teacher’s speech was full of loopholes, and the students could feel the obvious shortcomings. After the speech was over, the students realized that the teacher had presented a negative example to start the contest in an educational way that caught their attention. Shortly afterwards, the host invited the first participant to the stage and, to the anticipation of the audience, she began her presentation on “Why we should care about gender equality.” The participants who followed her gave their own speeches. Some participants presented very original topics such as "Why we should care about dating” and “Why we should care about sharks”; others focused on more regular topics with their own unique perspectives, such as “Why we should care about racism”. Each contestant gave a speech with excitement and originality, in terms of both body and spoken language. After all speeches were over, L2D, the school’s musical club, impressed the audience with their performance of a song from the musicalHamiltonwhile the judges were scoring the speeches.
In the end, the judges decided to give 1st place to Jason Wang, 2nd place to Gaia Soggia, and 3rd place to Emma Li. The English Speech Competition ended with a group photo of the top three contestants and a speech by the host. We hope to see more students participating in next semester’s competition and giving more creative and amazing speeches.
