Lecture on Smart Parenting
The topic of parent-child relationships has always been a topic worthy of attention and discussion, especially for high school students and parents. On the evening of November 19th, SHSID high school launched the first "Parent School" of the 2020 school year. The school was honored to have the psychology teacher Zhou Wenxiu of East China University of Science and Technology as the guest speaker to give a speech on the topic "The Coolest Parent-Child Relationship of High School Students" to parents through an online conference.
Before the speech, some of the questions that parents were most concerned about were collected. Therefore, at the beginning of the speech, Ms. Zhou gave targeted answers to these questions from the parents. Subsequently, Ms. Zhou gave examples of common problems of high school parenting based on her rich experience. At the same time, she also pointed out that although parents understand that children’s psychology should be valued, parents do not often really pay attention to their children’s true psychological state in the relationship. In many cases, parents are busy with their work and neglect to care for their children's feelings, or pay too much attention to their children’s academic performance, or fail to create a relaxed and warm living environment for their children, which adversely affects students' psychological well-being. Ms. Zhou summarized the three characteristics of high school students for the parents: first, they are physically more and more mature; second, they are undergoing a rapid cognitive and intellectual development; third, they are reaching a stage of sexual maturity.
In response to the situation, Ms. Zhou made several suggestions for parents: first, parents should communicate more with their children so that they can have more opportunities to build up positive and pleasant relationship during communication; second, parents should learn to listen patiently and actively, not to judge or rush to conclusions; third, parents must discover the unique advantages and charms of children, and give them more support and company; they must also not criticize or offer up too many suggestions so that students can learn and come up with solutions on their own; fourth, parents shall accept their children’s shortcomings and incompleteness. In the Q&A session, Ms. Zhou further answered various questions raised by the parents. After clearing up the doubts raised by some parents, this fruitful "Parent School" ended successfully.
This "Parent School" allowed parents to have a better understanding of the characteristics of high schoolers and the practical tips to bear in mind when getting along with their children. We trust it will positively help both students and parents. SHSID will keep working together with parents to help our students thrive.
