Grade 9: 1st Stage of Freshmen Project
On the CAS class on November 11th, 2020, Grade 9 homeroom teachers introduced students to the Freshmen Project.
“Who are we at SHSID? ” Students are expected to complete a project based on this question over the course of the next two months. In groups of 6-8 persons within each homeroom, students shall incorporate relevant information from at least six academic subjects of their choice to investigate their role in the school.
This is the first project that freshmen are assigned which requires dedication, teamwork, and cross-subject thinking skills. Freshmen need to communicate within their own groups to distribute roles and organize their time. Students are to apply what they learn in class to their projects; through this process, they can foster their own skills and improve on their own academics. Finally, the project is also valuable in practicing and preparing for future semester projects which will be more challenging and time-consuming.
The main purpose of the project, however, is to find the position of each freshman in high school. Being new high schoolers, confusion and uncertainty are nearly omnipresent within freshmen. What do we do in high school? What is high school life like for everyone else? Who are we? These may be the questions within every freshman; the Freshmen Project will also provide an opportunity for students to take their time and think carefully about themselves. Understanding one’s identity at SHSID can clear up one’s path, allowing each to walk on the right path to self-realization.
