Grade 8: Sunshine Service Learning Group

November 12, 2020

The Sunshine Service Learning Group is a group that is dedicated to helping adults with intellectual disabilities, otherwise known as “Sunshine Babies.” The Sunshine Group makes and sells handmade soaps to collect charity funds and raise public awareness of people with disabilities.

On Friday, November 6, 2020, at the Bund Sunshine Home, the Sunshine Service Learning Group arranged its first activity: to accompany mentally disabled adults to make soap, and to celebrate for two students that have their birthdays this month. The students arrived there early and the teacher in charge briefed them about the uniqueness of the crowd and the task this time. At first, the students were a little restrained and unaccustomed when they entered. But after some time, perhaps due to the passionate sun and warm weather that day, they soon felt their nervousness melt away. The students chatted with the individuals and slowly stirred the half-made soap solution. An hour and a half passed quickly before the students poured the soap solution into the mold and began to prepare for the birthday celebration. The students performed dances and juggling to the delight of all. Finally, in laughter and fun, the Sunshine Group’s first activity ended successfully. Perhaps the performances weren’t outstanding, and the soap-stirring was not quite as skillful, but the most important thing is the company and respect the adults were given. It is believed that this kindness has been successfully passed on to them. This is also the mission of the Sunshine Service Group—to give them respect and company in future activities like this.
