Middle School Section: Parent Lecture—Establishing Warm Parent-Child Relationships
At 7 pm on Thursday, November 5th, the Parent Lecture Hall of SHSID Middle School started on the ClassIn platform. The parent-child relationship has a profound impact on the growth of a child. How can good interactions between parents and adolescents be established? How can positive parent-child relationships be formed? These are the main questions that have been discussed a lot by psychologists and educators. The topic for Thursday was a lecture delivered by the famous psychologist and special full-time psychological counselor of East China University of Science and Technology, Ms. Zhou Wenxiu, and was entitled ”Why am I always be the one who gets hurt? Establishing a warm parent-child relationship”. The lecture was closely related to real life and very inspiring to the audience.
Ms. Zhou started from the four main parenting styles that may form in a family and then proposed that parents can protect and cultivate two indispensable abilities in their children—creativity and social adaptation. By encouraging their children to persist in sports, take the initiative to communicate, and be interested in reading, these abilities will surely be cultivated in their children. The ability to communicate with adolescent children must address four topics: autonomy, intimacy, achievement, and identity. The children desire to have control over their own lives, to have their privacy protected and respected, and to get encouragement and approval from others. Parents need to provide support to their children through appropriate and careful observation and understanding. During the pandemic, the disputes and confrontations between many parents and children due to Internet access became more intense. In this regard, Ms. Zhou analyzed the reasons why children can become addicted to games. She pointed out that addiction to games is a manifestation of excessive psychological needs. Parents can try to make their children realize that in addition to surfing the Internet, they can also do many other interesting and meaningful things. Play can take many forms and is as important as learning.
The short one-hour lecture was full of helpful tips based on both case analysis and theoretical support. Ms. Zhou shared her many years of educational and psychological counseling experience and taught parents a vivid lesson.
