Grades 6-8: Online Charity Concert

October 30, 2020

Music is a big part of our lives—an important factor that brings us happiness. On Thursday, October 22nd,theeighth grade Music Charity Service Learning Group organized a concert that was very successful. Fortunately, we were able to talk to the concert’s organizer, Jason from 8(11), andask him a few questions…

Reporter: Have you ever organized this kind of online charity event before?

Jason: Back in June, earlier this year, I was able to initiate a charity concert. However, this time, I wanted to challenge myself and try to organize an entire concert. Unavoidably, there were many challenges. However, throughout the entire process of planning a concert, I learned a lot of lessons.

Reporter: Throughout the entire process of planning a concert, have your views on organizing a concert changed?

Jason: In the beginning, we all thought that managing a concert was something simple and easy. However, there were many things that we needed to do. We needed to find performers, create posters, and design donation methods. All of these things would be impossible to accomplish without the help of teachers.

Reporter: What is the biggest challenge you faced?

Jason: The hardest obstacle I faced in planning this concert was accommodating the online format. In the past, charity concerts usually took place in the school auditorium, and performances were all live. But this time, due to the pandemic, we were restricted to an online format. This way of performance was completely different from any we had done previously, and it required a lot more preparation. All of the performances had to be recorded before the show, and the hosts had to learn many things about the platform in case an accident happened.

Another challenge was time management. Since we only had limited time, writing speeches for hosts was an extremely challenging task. On top of all the school assignments and projects, I found it very hard to find time to even go on WeChat and talk to anyone. At first, we all thought that this concert was clearly impossible to plan, but then, after listing out what we needed to do, we started to accomplish the tasks step-by-step. Gradually, we were able to find time to write speeches, rehearse, and get to know the Classin platform better.

Reporter: What kind of values have you learned from this concert?

Jason: Even though there are things that we didn’t do perfectly throughout the process, we were able to learn from our mistakes and will continue to improve in the future. Of course, the success of the online charity concert is important, but the happiness and experience we gained are more crucial. Overall, we have learned a lot from this event, and if we are given the opportunity to organize a charity concert again in the future, we will be more than welcome to participate!

This student-led concert was very successful in many aspects. All the performers’ great efforts and the planners’ devotion have contributed to this excellent result. We all had a happy evening listening to various performances, appreciating the beauty of music. May the power of music be with you, always!
