October 29, 2020

In the afternoon of October 26th, Wang Limin, professor of East China University of Science and Technology, and Che Fei, a famous cultural relic collector, brought a unique appreciation class mixed with chemistry in the Tang, Song, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period to the students in the Lecture Hall of Zhentao Building. This course integrates history, culture, art, and chemistry into one. Through exquisite pieces of cultural relics and ceramics, the students' vision was drawn to the distant periods of China.

The cultural relics on display in this course were quite amazing. If these cultural relics were put together, they could definitely make a beautiful film. Accompanied by the lingering sound of "guqin" playing, teachers were dressed in traditional Chinese costumes and introduced exquisite art treasures and their stories to the audience. The attendants seemed to go back to ancient times, and were immersed in the magnificent classical artistic concept.

In the course, first of all, the development of Chinese ceramic art was introduced, the historical story behind the artwork was discussed, and the chemical knowledge used in the ceramic craft materials was described. Then, the teachers went through the knowledge prize contest, and let the students understand the knowledge behind cultural relics. Then, the students came to the stage to see closely some cultural relics unearthed in the Tang, Song, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, some of which are national first-class protection cultural relics. In the end, the students listened to the ceramic production process in the gripping lecture, experienced the essence of traditional culture, and used chemistry knowledge to make clay on the stage to paint beautiful enamel on some modern porcelain artwork.

In the lingering sound of"guqin", the students obtained a lot. This class combined traditional culture with chemistry. Through this course, the students not only approached the traditional culture, felt the artistic treasures, and improved the aesthetic accomplishment, but also painted the enamel on some modern porcelain artwork. We hope that in the future, more people will come to course like this to experience history, view exquisite art, and feel the charm of Chinese culture.
