Home-School Partnership: Supervision and Management of Campus Cafeteria

Dining on campus is an integral part of school life. School cafeterias are perfect places where SHSID students enjoy meals with their peers. To offer a variety of highly nutritious, healthy meals and create safe, comfortable dining experiences for students, our school has developed and implemented high, intricate standards in terms of food safety and service. As is known to all, food safety and student dining experiences have always been of prime concern to parents, schools, and society at large. In addition to the strict health inspections conducted by Shanghai Municipal Food and Drug Supervision Administration, the Municipal Education Commission, and the school’s regular self-inspections, the dedicated parent representatives of our school’s PTSA also contribute to the supervision and management of our cafeterias.

On the morning of October 21, we were elated to have parent representatives of the Middle and Primary School section and the High School section visit our school cafeterias. Accompanied by cafeteria staff and school faculty, they inspected Puxi campus’s Sodexo No. 1 and No. 2 cafeterias. The inspection checklist they used covered every aspect and detail of school cafeteria management, such as the cafeteria business license and health permit, kitchen cleanliness, kitchen staff health management, kitchen facilities, food procurement and storage, and cooking process, sanitation, waste disposal, etc. Sodexo cafeteria managers gave an introduction of the set of the measures designed to guarantee hygiene in the kitchens and safe dining expediences for students in the cafeterias. Overall, the parent representatives were satisfied with school cafeteria management. With the constructive feedback and suggestions from them, the Sodexo cafeterias and the school will strive to ensure food service on campus remain highly safe.

Food safety is a top priority for our school. The regular monthly cafeteria inspection enhances parents’ understanding of school management; this kind of effective communications between families and the school make it possible for our school to continue to improve. We really appreciate the opportunity to connect with students’ parents/guardians as well as their support and recognition of our efforts.
