Grade 9: College Info Session
On October 10th, the 9th graders once again gathered together in the Zhentao Building Lecture Hall to attend a lecture given by college counselor Melo Chu. The talk provided basic information about college and gave students a brief overview of university education.
The lecture began with Mr. Chu asking the audience to think about where they want to spend their first few years of adult life upon high school graduation. After hearing a few different answers, he moved on by advising students that when picking colleges, one should ask themselves where they actually want to work and live instead of making their decision based on the prestige associated with specific places.
The lecture continued by searching into the more technical aspects of college. Mr. Chu first broke down the differences between US and non-US colleges, touching on things such as application time and the importance of scores. He then explored the characteristics of colleges from other places –– from the United Kingdom to Canada to Japan. The lecture gave a short rundown of the features of universities from sites all over the world, discussing the unique advantages of each location as well as their specific attributes.
Overall, this lecture presented a quick run-through of college education, giving this year’s new high schoolers a look of what is to come.
