High School Department of Social Sciences: Faculty Seminar
On the afternoon of Sep. 25th, Ms. Zhang Li, head of the Department of Social Sciences hosted a faculty seminar on conceptual learning and teaching. Firstly, Ms. Ye Zhen explained the importance of having conceptual teaching methods based on the new syllabus of IB Economics. She introduced the changes of the structure of different knowledge modules in the syllabus and the new ways of assessment in exam papers. Another innovation is the emphasis on the 9 economic concepts at the center of those knowledge modules. The new syllabus hopes to guide students to better understand the big picture of the subject through learning the core concepts.
Then, Ms. Gu Yuewen introduced the application of conceptual learning and teaching in Grade 10 economics classes. In these classes, teachers use a large number of case studies and class activities to let students understand the economics concepts through practice. Starting from the core concepts, students went on to gain other relevant knowledge. In this way, students could both better understand the knowledge framework and improve their application skills on real-life issues. The teachers also shared the activities conducted in their classes, including simulation games and debate.
