Grade 6: Youth Development Class—Online Safety

September 30, 2020

In the youth development class of September 24th, grade six students were introduced to the topic of being citizens of the internet era. This class discussed how students should use the internet correctly regarding the four respective aspects of network security, citation and plagiarism, cyberviolence, and knowing how to interpret online information.

Through group discussion and watching relevant videos, students learned about these four aspects. First they learned why they should pay attention to protecting their personal privacy online. The next topic was how to deal with dangerous people and harassment encountered online. Then, students learned and discussed how to correctly quote content from online, and to avoid plagiarism. They were encouraged to use civilized language online and to not attack or bully others. When finding information online, students were told to pay attention to distinguishing the truth from lies, and to be careful to not become biased by misleading information. At the same time, they were told to try to avoid visiting dangerous websites on the internet and to learn to protect themselves.

A qualified citizen in the digital age should know that the principles of security, honesty, and respect for others are all equally important in the online world. For today’s students, they use computers and the internet more than previous generations did. This lesson gave students a better understanding of how to use the internet correctly and benefited them a lot.
