Grade 10: Lecture on Critical Thinking

September 29, 2020

On September 24th, Ms. Shen Chenli, Head of the English and World Language Department, and Mr. Zhuang Zhenmin, Head of the Chinese Department, delivered succinct lectures on the science of linguistics and the trade-off between equality and justice, respectively.

During the first half of the lecture, Ms. Shen talked about linguistics—or a scientific approach to language. She first identified the relationship between the abilities to think critically and logically interpreting language, further enhancing the abstract concept through giving real-life examples, such as the characters used for the word “cow” in Chinese, the days of a week in Japanese, etc. At the end of her lecture, Ms. Shen encouraged students to apply critical thinking frequently, especially when tackling the abstract.

Afterwards, Mr. Zhuang gave an engaging speech on the inevitable trade-off between desirable social values. After analyzing two images representative of equality and justice, Mr. Zhuang extended the discussion to a larger context and explained how the so-called social justice cannot be enforced equally for all.

The lecture ended with everyone having a better understanding of critical thinking.
