Grade 10: Seeing Marginalized People in Society
On the morning of September 23rd, 10th graders gathered like usual at Zhentao Building Lecture Hall to listen to a speech.
The speakers Nina Ma and Winnie Xiong from class 10(2) gave the peers a powerful speech addressing the struggles faced by the many marginalized people in society who cannot speak up for themselves. There are women out there who do not have access to good, clean, high-quality pads during their periods, since they can only afford to buy cheap, low-quality pads which are not good for their health. There are delivery men out there who risk their lives on the roads and rush to be able to bring food take-outs to the right households on time. These are only two of the many examples to show how many underprivileged people face struggles while not being seen in society. Affluent people live in big cities sometimes neglect the existence of those marginalized people. While many students in Shanghai may have access to the internet every day and can afford to live comfortably in a big city, they may not realize that some of those hidden people in society might not actually have access to the internet and sometimes receive low monthly income which is impossible to make a good living.
Instead of questioning how these marginalized people face such burdens in their lives, the speakers advocated that everyone should start sympathizing with their hidden struggles, exposing more resources to those who lack the platform to speak up, and try stepping into their shoes. At the end of the speech, Nina Ma and Winnie Xiong asked for people to join the club Banana-heads and help with their organization named Spotlight, in order to learn more about the lives of thosemarginalized peopleand try helping them.
