G4-5 | Online Parents’ Meeting
At 6 pm on September 22 and 24, the fourth and fifth grade of SHSID held online parents’ meetings for this semester with the themes of “Learning to Be Independent” and “Becoming Excellent Graduates,” respectively. The meetings each lasted an hour and a half, and mainly introduced the curriculum, the event schedule, new requirements for students, and many other aspects of the whole school year to the parents.
During the fifth grade online parents’ meeting on September 22, first, Ms. Lu, the head of the fifth grade, introduced the overall situation of the grade, particularly the homeroom teachers of the eight classes and the features of each class. She then explained the various changes for the students now that they have advanced from the fourth to the fifth grade. We hope that while they improve their self-management and independent learning abilities, students will also learn emotional control and exercise interpersonal skills. As the primary section graduates, we hope that students will understand the meaning of our core value acronym GRADUATE, and learn to apply those skills to solving problems encountered in study and in life.
Afterward, the respective leaders of the five main subjects of Chinese, Mathematics, English, Geography, and Science introduced their departments. Their introductions each included an overview, learning requirements, offline evaluation tests, and blended learning that combines in-class learning and learning via the LC platform. Afterward, they also gave parents tips on how to help students improve their academic literacy.
Finally, Ms. Chris, the director of the fourth and fifth grades, suggested that all parents and teachers build a learning community together in order to achieve better home-school communication and to accompany the children as they grow up healthy and strong. Ms. Chris also gave some suggestions on how to help students develop in school and home education. First of all, we must pay attention to children’s physical and mental health and help them establish the correct values from an early age; secondly, education should follow the cognitive and developmental standards for children of each age by properly stimulating children’s interest in learning and comprehensively developing their various abilities. In school, teachers will also take the growth and development of every child seriously, respect and value every student, create equal opportunities, build a platform for students to express themselves, and strengthen students’ confidence.
In the fourth grade online parents’ meeting on September 24, the head of the fourth grade, Ms. Zhuo Yue, introduced the grade four teachers, the changes from grade three to four, the core value acronym of GROW, and the ASB (Association of Student Board). This introduction gave parents a general understanding of the grade.
Afterward, the respective subject leaders of Math, Chinese, English, Geography, and Science provided more detailed introductions of this semester’s learning content, learning objectives, and learning methods. Students’ assignments and projects were also presented on the live stream platform, vividly showing teachers’ expectations and students’ achievements of the past month.
Finally, Ms. Chris, the director of grade four and five, analyzed the fourth-grade students’ characteristics and the educational direction that fits their grade level. “Physical, cognitive, social-emotional achievement” are three expectations for the fourth-grade students as well as the educating goals for their teachers and parents. Ms. Chris encouraged parents to not only help children gain knowledge and cultivate good habits but also to assist them to form sound personalities and proper values as they become independent learners and global citizens.
The parents’ meetings covered topics from children’s education to specific subject requirements, thus providing an opportunity to have a deep and genial conversation with parents. We expect to create a learning community that is shared by all the teachers, parents, and students. This community will be a driving force for the children’s education that will let the school and the parents respect and understand student needs, learn from each other, and provide the best educational support for student growth.
