Puxi Campus Grade 2: PG Class—The Growth-Mindset
Whether in the classroom or in daily life, it is common to hear students whining, “this is too hard!” or “I can never do it!” Both of these phrases in fact show that fixed-mindsets are stopping them from further trying and from developing new skills. On the other hand, kids with growth-mindsets tend to think more positively and are more willing to push forward when confronted with similar challenges.
In PG class on September 10th, G2 from the Puxi campus started a journey of developing growth-mindsets. Firstly, teachers showed the students a diagram of the brain and asked them about their understanding of brain function, thereby triggering heated class discussion. Our brains can help us to feel, see, hear, think, remember, move, and experience the world. In the human mind, our ways of thinking are malleable and can be trained, strengthened, and reshaped. Soon after this discussion, G2 teachers listed a series of common scenarios in daily life and guided students to decide which mindset each showed and why. The students actively participated in this discussion. Many even then mentioned that when faced with challenges, we should never give up and that making mistakes is also a way of learning. Lastly, students freely shared ideas from their own experiences about how we can apply growth-mindset in our learning and lives.
Of course 35 minutes is not much time, but from this class the children still had wonderful discussion and deep reflection that will no doubt have some impact on their future. We will work together with the children to face any difficulty, embrace growth, and become stronger learners.
