Pudong Campus: Uplifting PG Class
Students of SHSID Pudong campus finally got a chance toonceagainparticipate in theirmuch-anticipated PG class at the beginning of this brand-new semester! In the PG classes of the first two weeks, homeroom teachersinitiatedthe personal growth educationclassesaccording to different core values. Let’s have a tour of the splendid activities held by different grades!
With the advent of this brand-new school year, G1-3 students started to learn the new core value acronym “H.E.R.O.”, which stands for 4 traits: Honor, Effort, Rigor, and Ownership. Students are expected to cultivate these good character traits during their time at SHSID.
The core value of this month is Honor, which encourages students to know and do what is right. The first graders discussed how to ask for permission and how to respond when encountering a problem. They also learned about appropriate physical contact by coloring different body parts. The students from grade two received a behavior list to check if they’ve shown honor when no one was watching. The third-grade teachers led their students to do an activity of “the clapping game” to help students understand that their behaviors should always match their values.
From these activities, all the students from grade one to grade three gained a deeper understanding of the core values of our school and are determined to be little “heroes”!
“GROW” is the core value acronym in fourth grade. The four letters in “GROW” stand for 4 traits: Growth mindset, Respect, Optimism, and Work ethic. All of these traits represent fourth-grade teachers’ expectations for their students. In these two weeks, the fourth grade teachers held lively discussions about “growth mindset”. With the guidance of homeroom teachers, the fourth graders demonstrated their understanding by gaving wonderful examples of negative fixed mindsets and positive growth mindsets. They also finished reflection games in groups and helped teachers to make a colorful poster of class rules.
As the seniors of the primary school, fifth grade students are about to face new challenges in middle school. During this transition year, the students will learn the core value acronym “GRADUATE” which we believe will prepare them well for life as qualified middle-schoolers as well as citizens of the world. Throughout this semester, Grade five students of Pudong campus will be introduced to various activities focused on developing a growth mindset, showing respect to the people and the world around them, accepting everyone regardless of their looks, culture, or beliefs, and becoming a determined, hardworking student.
Right after the semester commenced, learning about how to develop a growth mindset set the tone for this new journey. Adopting a growth mindset will be a worthwhile experience if students start by renewing their perception of themselves and their classmates. During the PG class, Grade five students of Pudong campus took an interesting buddy quiz. First, everyone anonymously wrote down some keywords about themselves on cards, and then the cards were mixed up for the whole class to match the keywords with the right student. Some keywords were quite tricky since they didn’t plainly show the characteristics which classmates already knew. The buddy quiz offered the students a valuable opportunity to be reacquainted with each other. Through such activities, students understood that there is always room for everyone to develop. This understanding represents a promising start for learning how to get rid of a fixed mindset and instead embrace challenges with a growth mindset.
