Grade 6: Youth Development Class—OKR Setting

September 10, 2020

On September 3, the sixth grade of SHSID organized a youth development class. Students learned the basic principles of OKR (Objective and Key Result method) in the classroom and formulated the goals and key achievements that they wanted to accomplish in their academic study and extracurricular activities in the first half of the semester under the guidance of teachers.

OKR is a set of management tools and methods that define and track objectives and their completion. It was invented by Andy Grove, the founder of Intel, and introduced to Google by John Doerr to be implemented there. The creation of an OKR is setting a goal with quantifiable steps to achieve in a specific time and tracking its completion regularly. OKR divides a large objective into several small, more easily completed steps. At the same time, because these steps are measured by clear numbers, students using the OKR system can regularly check their performance toward their main goal.

In the youth development class, the teachers first introduced the OKR system as a whole. They explained the method, how to use it, the key points, and the benefits of OKR creation by showing excellent OKR models from students of previous years. Then, students brainstormed and set their own OKRs according to their own situations. Some students set moving up in math as their academic objective, for example. In order to achieve this goal, they set three steps (key results) to help them. These steps were getting more than 90 points for each assignment, spending 20 minutes reviewing math notes every day, and asking teachers at least 2 questions every week. Some students set improving swimming speed as an extracurricular activity objective. For this they set two key results to accomplish. These key results were practicing swimming at least twice a week and doing it for one hour each time. Finally, the students uploaded their completed OKR questionnaire to the Linked Classroom platform. Homeroom teachers will also check the OKR progress of the students every week to encourage and urge them to continue their efforts to achieve their goals step by step.

At the beginning of this new school year, everyone is full of ambition and energy. Now is a good time to set goals for ourselves. I hope that students can seriously commit to their own OKRs and strive to achieve them.
