Grade12: "Explore Yourself" Senior Orientation Day 1

September 4, 2020

The new academic year kicked off on September 1st. All the students of Grade 12 started the semester with a 2-day Senior Orientation with the theme of “Explore Yourself”. Due to the pandemic, Grade 12 students were unable to conduct the annual senior orientation off-campus; despite this, the variety of activities was as diverse as previous years and students certainly enjoyed a lot.

In the morning the first day, some students took part in the mock interviews, which help set up a solid foundation for the upcoming college application season. The rest of the students engaged in a conversation with their guidance counselors where they gained valuable advice about college essays and the application process.

In the afternoon, students were provided with the opportunity to experience a blindfolded game that required students to work in teams. With 6 to 7 students per group with blindfolds on, they were told to create a perfect square and an equilateral triangle with a rope. Though it was difficult, each team successfully completed their tasks after multiple attempts. Through this game, students learned the importance of communication within a team as well as the process of reflection in order to improve their techniques.

Another event the students participated in was a lecture on social etiquette with a focus on manners for interviews. An informational yet interactive speech was delivered by Ms. Su Xingyan. Starting from an overview of key aspects to consider in maintaining a good image, the students were then engaged in a short lesson where they learned how to stand and sit in the most appropriate way during interviews. The students were enthusiastic to learn how to succeed in presenting a good image of themselves, and it was a rewarding experience for everyone.

Some students also attended university information sessions by top universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Students listened attentively as the speakers gave detailed outlines of admission requirements and important deadlines.

All in all, students not only learned the importance of image when they present themselves but also developed a deeper awareness of themselves and their peers. After a fulfilling and enriching experience, the students were energized for the next day of senior orientation.
