STEM Event Sharing: Visiting UM-SJTU Joint Institute

July 14, 2020

On July 10, 2020, Mr. Liao, Ms. Chen, and Mr. He, the senior high school science and technology supervisors of the International Division, led 6 students with strong interests in science and innovation projects on a visit to the UM-SJTU Joint Institute (The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute). Director Zhang Yu and Director Xiao Jianrong of the UM-SJTU Joint Institute warmly received the group. Director Xiao first took the students to the Innovation Center of Jiao Tong University and visited the laboratories specializing in 3D printing, racing cars, UAV, aeromodelling, etc.; the laboratory’s excellent equipment inspired the students to have a greater yearning for science and innovation while immersing them in wonder.

Then, under the guidance of Director Xiao and Director Zhang, the group came into the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, where three professors detailed the changes that scientific research has brought to people's lives from their respective fields, which greatly inspired the students. Starting with composite materials and circuits, Professor Shen Yanfeng patiently and elaborately explained the process of the mutual conversions of electrical and mechanical energy, sound and electrical energy, and thermal and electrical energy. Through a series of well-prepared circuit experiments, Professor Shen demonstrated the characteristics of piezoelectric and ultrasonic materials with oscilloscope waveforms, allowing everyone to experience the charm of high-tech composite materials at zero distance. Starting from the wireless chargers for mobile devices used in daily life, Professor Ma Chengbin explained the optimized design of the Megahertz radio transmission system and the possibility of improving future charging methods, such as: how mobile devices can achieve contactless charging in the future, the need for the wireless charging of drones, the application of wireless charging on new energy automobiles, and combining AI technology with intelligent wireless charging scenarios, which allowed the students to understand the close link between the development of science and technology and daily life. Professor Bo Shouhang introduced the development of the lithium battery from the invention of lithium battery in 1976 to the launch of the first commercial lithium battery by SONY in 1991, inspiring students to think about the factors to consider when using batteries and what can be improved about lithium batteries. In the end, Professor Bo combined his own research results and overviewed the future developments of new battery materials. During this visit, students developed a clear knowledge of scientific research and all enjoyed in this worthwhile trip.

This visit opened the gateway for students to discover the world of scientific research. The school wishes they can discover their own interests and research directions as soon as possible as they boldly march forward on the road of scientific exploration.
