High School Math Department: Polishing a Statistics Lesson Plan

July 6, 2020

On the morning of June 29 and the afternoon of July 2, the high school Math Department conducted two meetings to prepare and polish a high-quality Statistics lesson plan.

Ms. Gao Yuer, a senior AP Statistics teacher, initiated the lesson plan. The topic was about the sample and survey, and the main content was the applications of four random sampling methods to real-world problems. The attending teachers tried to help refine class activities to enhance students' abilities in problem-solving and improve students' statistical thinking habits.

Then, the teachers designed several class discussions to help the students notice the difficulties in balancing efficiency and accuracy in the sampling process. Some teachers also advised getting technology involved in the class, such as the use of graphing calculators or math software. The department had a great discussion on the teaching objectives, methods, and process, as well as how to stimulate students' interest, guide students to look at data objectively, and improve students' critical thinking ability. The two meetings produced a well-polished lesson plan.
