Grade 12: Senior Project Finale
The Senior Project is designed to be the culmination of each student’s academic experience at SHSID. It is a genuine opportunity for students to merge their various interests, passions, and curiosities with the modern workplace and their academic lives as seniors at SHSID. Similarly, the project is a vehicle for seniors to demonstrate collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity. An education at SHSID has many facets, from the basic facts of subject matter to critical thinking, problem-solving, and attaining lifelong skills. The Senior Project is a measurement of those lifelong skills that are important to attaining a quality life and a desire for continued learning.
In early June, the seniors finally had the chance to showcase their results for the senior projects they had been working on for the past few months. After months of preparation and creation, almost everyone was brimming with excitement to show the teachers what they had accomplished.
The presentations for each student was held online. After a last-minute rehearsing, they waited for their evaluation teachers to arrive. One by one, students delineated their efforts in front of the teachers assessing their presentations; in return, teachers also listened carefully and respectfully to students’ presentations, taking down notes and asking students insightful questions at the end of each presentation.
The online presentations were completed and 18 pieces of work were selected as Outstanding Projects.
Online Internship:
Charlotte Xia and Nicole Hsu choose to intern at an advertising company because their major in college is Advertising. Through this graphic designing experience, both Nicole and Charlotte can have a better idea of what they will be studying in the future and have a clear image of future careers.
Individual Research
In order to comprehend the connection between black hole and fluid, Tony Qian learned about the special theory of relativity and the formation of stars on Khan Academy, read Stephen Hawking’s research paper on black holes, watched BBC about the formation of our solar system, quantum mechanics, and mathematics. As a result, he gained more insight into the eligibility of the big bang theory and the origin of the universe.
Tony’s reflection:
This senior project has taught me so many things that I did not think it was capable of. Not only did I get more knowledgeable about the field that I am passionate about, but I also learned about time management, self-discipline, and the ability to design for myself a suitable and flexible schedule. It has been quite an amazing experience, and it would definitely have positive impacts on my university life.
Seminars:
Two-week seminars motivate Shunichi Ueda to do plenty of personal research to fully understand the concepts taught during class.
Shunichi’s reflection:
I have to say I learned a lot over the two weeks, and although things did not go in the direction I planned, I am still grateful for all the things I learned. The seminars really made me see the importance of continuously learning, for you can never learn too much.
While some seniors may not have met the demands of their initial ambitions, the knowledge they gained about how things happen in real, chaotic, and complex environments is exactly what this project hoped students would take from. All the seniors presented to the audience their unique ideas, and, amazingly, none of them brought up similar ideas, reflecting the diversity and creativity of the SHSIDers. Let’s congratulate these students on receiving their rewards through their commitment and effort.
