Grade 8: Science Academy Activity

June 17, 2020

Grade 8 Students’ Academy of Science is a service-learning group dedicated to educating people about interesting scientific phenomena. Last semester, members of our group prepared lectures about different topics and presented them to students of different grades—from first grade up to ninth grade. This semester, due to the COVID-19, we could not give out lectures according to our schedule. However, we managed to find another way of presenting those interesting topics to people: we registered for a WeChat official account, and sent out articles about science. Each group made a video as well, which would be posted on various video-sharing platforms, such as Bilibili and YouTube. The results were great.

Combined, our Bilibili videos have 27,000+ views, and the articles posted on our official account have an average of about 400 reads. Despite the challenges during this special period, the desire to learn more has not vanished, but grew even stronger.

Joyce and Jessie’s team, for example, chose the topic “Is Yawning Contagious”. Our original plan was to prepare a lecture and present it to the sixth and seventh graders. As that is currently not viable, we decided to make a video about contagious yawning. It took days of preparation, but the results were astonishing: we made the most-viewed SciAcademy video yet, attracting more than 9000 views on Bilibili and 600 on WeChat. Our video was even chosen to be in the recommended section of“科普”on BIlibili for a while! Moreover, the views of the video made by Chloe Yan is over 14,000+!

Overall, SciAcademy has provided us with an incredibly fun and memorable time. We learned a lot from our research, and also enjoyed the process of making videos and writing articles very, very much. It is just so cool to know that we are educating others with our work.
