High School Biology Department: Biology Week Lecture Series 1
In our daily life, we may be curious about many things, ask questions, and want to know the answers. Since we are one member of the Earth's living beings, our life is closely related to life science. In this biology week, students from Grade 12 shared several interesting biology questions and the answers they found.
How to interpret a blood test report? At noon on June 8, Yiyang and Rachel told the story of Xiaoming going to hospital and doing a physical examination, in a dialogue form. In the story, the two lecturers interpreted the meaning of Xiaoming's blood test report from perspectives of a doctor, as well as health problems reflected by test results outside the normal range. Next, Frank and Lily revealed the mysterious connection between intestinal flora and brain. Frank explained the relevant paper vividly, making the paper easy to understand. Lily used the hanging closet shelf, stuffed toys, and other things in her room to build the "intestine", "brain" and other organs, showing how intestinal flora affect the brain, thus emotions, by secreting neurotransmitters. Does the cause of the ongoing pandemic, the coronavirus, have life? At noon on June 9, Alina and Eric used self-made videos and slides to analyze the historical controversy about whether the virus has life from multiple aspects. Since ancient time, longevity has been the goal of many people. Here comes a question: is there a gene for longevity? Tina and Lelan, role-playing a BBC journalist and various professors, explained several genes related to longevity and how these genes contribute to longevity.
These wonderful lectures were mind-opening for the audience and triggered discussions. In order to answer these interesting questions, numerous scientific research projects have been done. Students realized that life science comes from the observation and exploration of the phenomena of life. At the same time, our excellent senior students used their outstanding knowledge and impressive presentation skills to set a good example in science study for students in lower grades.
