The students enjoyed multiple activities in order to highlight and promote Roman and Greek Reading Week.

On Monday, the students spent time admiring a famous Rick Riordan film: “Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters”. The students discussed the similarities and differences between the famous novel,Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. There were multiple fruitful discussions about how Rick Riordan uses direct and indirect characterization throughout his novels to make exhilarating plots and themes.

Tuesday was devoted to a traditional dress that was worn during the Roman time period at Puxi campus. Students were asked to read an informational text in order to create their own toga. Students learned the importance of following step-by-step instructions to create a product of their own. Everyone enjoyed Toga Tuesday! For Teamwork Tuesday at Pudong campus, the students created short stories to share in which they discussed what happens when the Gods assemble to defeat the Titan.

Wednesday was a thrilling day filled with gods and goddesses walking the halls of SHSID. Students participated in Role Play Wednesday. Each student was asked to express themselves through costumes and props that represented a god or goddess of their choice. The teachers were even seen dressing up and instructing as famous and minor gods! There was lots of laughter and explanations about costume ideas and props.

On Thursday, the English teachers at Puxi campus taught the students the ancient Greek alphabet. The students were challenged to learn a new language in order to write their own names. Each day the students had the opportunity to take advantage of hybrid learning. The students uploaded their ancient Greek names onto LinkedClassroom. They also had the chance to admire the hard work and determination of their classmates. Pudong campus was a sea of white when all the students arrived in their Greek Reading Week shirts. For “T-shirt Thursday”, students designed a shirt and voted on their favorite one. Our two lucky winners, Hankun and Rachel C., had their designs printed on shirts for students to wear.

Grades 4 and 5 of Puxi campus finished author’s week, by identifying and highlighting “tragic flaws”. A tragic flaw can be defined as a character defect that causes the downfall of the protagonist of a tragedy. The students not only noticed tragic flaws in gods and goddesses, but they took it to another level by designing costumes that showed these flaws. It was an awesome day spent with discourse about how a character’s tragic flaw can impact the entire plot of a story. To end Greek Reading Week, the students at Pudong campus retold a Greek mythology story from a different viewpoint for Freaky Friday.

This was the first annual Roman and Greek Reading Week. The students enjoyed developing their understanding of the famous author, Rick Riordan, while looking deeper into important literary elements. We are already looking forward to our next author’s week at Shanghai High School International Division!
