Grade 10: The Final Sophomore Project Presentation

June 1, 2020

On May 27th, dozens of sophomore groups crowded into packed online meetings with expectant judges waiting to observe their presentations. This was the day of the final Sophomore Project presentation. The 10th graders had been preparing for this all year, starting from the beginning of school up through this unprecedented global pandemic and persevering until now.

For the initial few months of the first semester, they drummed up fantastical topics from many facet of society, culture, technology and more, all in order to answer one key question: “Who are we?”. Topics ranged from headphones to space exploration, climate change to TV shows—each somehow linking back to the identities of the students that presented them. They scoured the internet for sources and reported back monthly to their mentors who monitored their progress.

After several months of preparation and research, slides were designed, speeches drafted, and ultimately, they found themselves in a final rehearsal with their mentors, bringing their journey together full circle. During the final rehearsal online, judges needed to comment on each student’s presentation and give an assessment grade. After a final “good luck” from their mentors, they came to their final presentations—nervous but ultimately fulfilled as they defined who they are through their topics. They were then told to reflect on the whole process in one last summary, one last thing to send to their mentors as they closed the cover on this multi-month adventure.
