Grades 4-5: Adjusting to the “New Normal”
On May 19th, Grades 4 and 5 returned to their lovely campus. In front of the teaching building, the teachers greeted the children warmly. The children washed their hands before entering the building, and after the infrared temperature measurement, they were filled with excitement as they walked into their classrooms.
There are hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes in the classroom as well as many certificates, trophies, and prizes prepared by teachers. The “Star of E-learning” award recognizes the most outstanding students of the online learning stage. We also had awards based on students’ participation, assignment quality, and other educational achievements. The G4 math group made the online badge into a real badge for the students to wear, and the Chinese group prepared exquisite prizes related to Chinese culture. Many children returned home with more than one prize.
In order to better connect the content taught before and after returning to school, each subject reviewed the previous knowledge through various methods before the new course began. Some subject reviews were guided by teachers, some were carried out through activities, and some were prepared by students in groups. The students delivered amazing review lessons, further demonstrating the independent learning spirit of self-study groups during the online period.
Since returning to school, teachers have paid more attention to their interactions with students and students’ physical and mental health. Because the children liked them so much, the teachers still actively use the online discussion forum and put interesting videos online. The online content is now supplementary to the classroom content, helping students review and consolidate their knowledge. Using both platforms has enriched teaching and brought about better teaching results.
The students have been looking forward to returning to school for a long time. They want to interact with teachers and communicate with each other. Jay of class 4 (1) said: “The combination of classroom learning in the morning and online learning in the afternoon can improve the ability of independent learning. There are questions and discussions in the classroom, as well as extensions and knowledge-based games online. I like both parts very much. ” Coming back to school has also received support and cooperation from parents. Jay’s mom said, “Seeing the kid going to school with high spirits every day, I know he must enjoy studying in school very much. From E-learning to hybrid learning, teachers have paid much effort. For children, hybrid learning is helping them to form a better habit of school learning and home-based learning. Learning has become more colorful for them.”
For more than a week, with the guidance of teachers, active participation of students, and the cooperation of parents, the teaching of Grades 4 and 5 has been carried out smoothly. We believe that children will become more independent learners under the “new normal”!
