Grade 12: Senior Project -- Stage II
In order to encourage students to better master and apply the knowledge they have acquired in high school, further promote academic pursuits after graduation, and help graduating seniors enhance their understanding of specific subject areas, the Senior Project was created. The project requires students to participate in a seminar, complete an online internship, or create an individual research project. By the end of May 23rd, all the 12th graders completed their projects.
Online Internship
Those who aspire to practice their skills in society may participate in an online internship. The result and reflection of participants’ work will be presented through the presentation. Among the students who chose online internship projects, some have chosen to teach children English through online platforms with a solid English foundation, and others have chosen to participate in online subtitle translation.
Individual Research
Those who have a profound interest in a certain field may independently complete a research report or build a creative design (e.g. painting, fashioning designs, creating computer programs, etc.) in their field of interest at home. For example, one of the teams—Soei, Lina, and David—became curious about the type of clothes they wear during practices and games. Thus, they decided to do research about the material of our training kits and create a t-shirt that is useful for the athletes at SHSID. Another team—Irene, Tiffany, and Joyce—targeted the class of 2020. They are dedicated to designing The Book of 2020 to document the memories and profiles of every single student now in 12th grade.
To ensure progress during the preparation of the project, the students met several times with their mentor online to discuss their project. Their discussion points ranged from the nature of their topic to any minor details such as aesthetics and presentation styles that could affect the final presentation of the project.
Seminars
From May 11th to May 22nd, senior students participated in online seminars on 11 different topics, namely an investigation of world languages under globalization, an investigation of the Conical Pendulum, behavioral economics, double-slit interference, gene editing, the chemistry of coffee brewing, etc. For example, in a biology seminar, the lecturer introduced the basic concepts of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, aiming to enable students to design the framework to regenerate an organ or a piece of tissue. For each topic, participants are required to carry out an in-depth discussion and exchange of opinions with teachers and classmates. After each seminar, students are required to complete the assignments given by teachers.
Therefore, the Senior Project not only demonstrated the students’ cooperation, critical thinking skills, and imagination but also tested the students’ knowledge of their mandatory and optional courses along with their ability to effectively utilize available resources. The grade 12 students are leaving high school and going on to pursue further education. A lot of students chose fields that are related to their future major, so the Senior Project provided them with a good opportunity to conclude their high school life and prepare for college. We sincerely hope students will present their improvements in academics and accomplishments during the presentation before graduation.
