Grade 8: Youth Development Class—A Letter to Future Self
On Thursday May 21st, 8th grade students had a unique Youth Development session.
In their homerooms, teachers asked students to write a letter. It is no ordinary letter, but a letter to the students themselves, due four years from now. In 2024, when students open the letters they wrote in middle school, they could reminisce memories about middle school years.
While the assignment may seem childish to some, teachers emphasized the importance of leaving no regrets. To further highlight that, they played a video of someone regretting deeply for not writing seriously when he was given an opportunity to do so. “Leave no regrets”—it was an important reason for writing this letter.
For the next thirty minutes, students wrote letters to themselves. It varied in topics: from music preferences, to sports stars, then to individualistic ideals. They started writing; the next moment, class was over. “There’s simply too many things to write about,” said one student. Her voice is shared among many, as there seemed to be a lot of information to share with the future self.
After class was over, students were given an envelope to seal the letters in. They were told to keep it stored, and reopen in 2024.
