Grade 9:Online Assembly(6)
On May 18, Ivan from class 9(5) gave an Assembly demonstration to all the nine graders in which he shared his online learning experience. As students' full-day online classes will be over, many may think that they are probably done with online classes, and they will not have the experience of sitting for hours a day, staring and listening to people talking on a home computer screen. Yet, no matter how long this pandemic will last, online learning and online education will only become more common in our lives. Many universities around the world—in China, the US, and the UK—offered open courses through online platforms even before thepandemic. We can also see that an increasing number of training institutions are offering their classes online. Therefore, Ivan thought that we are truly in an age of online education.
Yes, learning online is definitely challenging. So, the question is, how do we excel in the era of online education? Ivan presented two pieces of advice to help others do well in online learning. The first piece of advice is to learn online as if you are offline. Many people fail to perform as usual during online learning because of the lack of supervision provided in an offline environment. This would result in an adverse effect. Thus, during online learning, Ivan advised his peers do what they normally do in offline classes: pay attention and take notes. Ivan's second piece of advice may seem contradictory to the first—that is not to learn as if you are offline. What he really meant was that everyone should bear in mind that online education, at least in most of its forms, is more directed by the learners than the educators. It is often a good idea to re-read, re-listen, or re-watch the materials you are not certain about at your own pace.
After returning to school, fulltime online learning will be replaced by a combination of online and offline learning. As long as each can adapt to the characteristics of different teaching methods and freely switch between online and offline classes, everyone will emerge from this period stronger.
