Grade 9-10: Online Outdoor Courses

May 20, 2020

As the COV1D-19 situation gradually becomes more stable, both students and teachers are returning to school. Although the time spent together is limited to only half a day, the school recognizes the importance of outdoor activities and surviving skills. On May 13th, a lecture about wilderness education took place during CAS class.

The lecturer first introduced the 6 most important elements for any wilderness education: judgment, planning & logistics, environmental integration, leadership, education, risk management, and outdoor living. The lecturer then moved on to explaining how these elements are applicable in real life.

The second half of the lecture mainly focused on the art of “tying ropes”. This skill is essential for outdoor living as the correct use of ropes can save one from many worse-case-scenarios. The main types of knots taught were the figure-8 knot, the fisherman knot and the slip knot, which are useful in climbing, connecting different ropes, and securing other knots, respectively. A brief document from WEA (Wilderness Education Association) that includes all the most useful knots was also provided for the students to look at whenever they need it.

Throughout the process, students had a lot of fun experimenting with the ropes together via Zoom, whilst learning the essential skills that can help them survive in wildlife adventures.
