High School Biology Department: Lab

May 20, 2020

On May 13, 2020, the 11th grade biology classes had the Flower Dissection lab. In the lab, students learnt structures of floral organs by dissecting three kinds of flowers: lilies, tulips and roses. Due to the pandemic, the lab work was not done in groups as before. Yet, students were passionate about the lab and finished their lab work as well as their lab report independently and on time. During the lab, students made careful observations about floral organs, asked numerous questions, and had discussions with classmates while maintaining a safe distance. Meanwhile, they gained new insight into the structures of floral organs. For example, they realized that shapes of ovaries vary in different species and do not all look like the textbook figure. In the end of the lab, students displayed their creativity and imagination by creating interesting artwork using floral parts such as petals. While raising students’ interest in learning, this lab also deepened their understanding of flower structure and prepared them for learning angiosperm reproduction.
