Grade 7: How Does One Become an Independent Learner? — Online Learning Sharing

May 18, 2020

How can we become independent learners? This question is worth thinking about. An independent learner must be hardworking and self-disciplined: someone who knows how to solve problems themselves.

It has been more than two months since students started online learning. During the online learning period, some students show improvement, and some are always responsible. The independent learners from each class in seventh grade shared their ways of learning during the YD class today, including time management and efficiency, which gives us more ideas about being independent learners.

Ella Park from 7(4) tells us that to be an independent learner, we definitely cannot procrastinate. You should know the deadline of your works and remember to submit them on time. If you have questions about the class, just ask your teacher or classmates directly because this is what a “learner” has to do. According to Pavlov, “The question mark is the key to any science.”

Isabella, also from 7(4), says that we can’t rely on our parents too much to be independent. You are the one who’s learning—not them—so they shouldn’t really help you. You might not find it to be so hard when you begin doing it on your own.

Minhan in 7(6) says checking to see if you have done your work for the day is very important. You need to understand what you can do and what can’t you do, and also how well you are managing each of those things. If you aren’t good at disciplining yourself, you won’t be an independent learner.

Eugene, in 7(11), introduces some APPs that help students to be less forgetful. He recommends a software called Microsoft To-Do, which lets you make a list of what you still have to do and shows you what you already did. He also mentions the calendar on an iPhone. Its use is quite similar to sticky notes. You can choose to use Notes on iPhone, too.

The tips above are what the independent learners wanted to share. We believe everyone can find their own way of learning—maybe yours will suit you better.
