Grade 9: An Interesting and Meaningful CAS class

May 18, 2020

Due to these special times, SHSID replaced the outdoor survival training with an engaging lecture during CAS on May 13th. Homeroom teachers opened the double block of CAS by addressing several tips on returning back to school. Teachers first informed students on the changes in campus policies as a result of the pandemic and moved on to discuss tips on practicing social distancing within the campus. For instance, hand sanitizers are placed by the entrance of each classroom for conveniences and students have to line up to get their temperatures checked before entering the building. Homeroom teachers then stressed to students that it is important to keep calm and to stay especially alert during times like this.

During the second half of the CAS class, the student representatives lead the student body to participate in various activities regarding different methods of tying knots with a rope. The student representatives first explained several terminologies and some background information with a presentation. After the presentation, the student representatives started their demonstration with a few simple knots, which gained positive feedback from the students. As the demonstration continued, the knots become harder to tie and students were constantly struck by confusion and heated discussions, especially when tying the "figure eight follow through". Eventually, by the end of the period, some students figured their way out and showcased their results with pride while others sulked in grief and continued their attempts. The engaging lesson laid a basic foundation for survival skills, or at least knotstying skills, in the wilderness and hopefully these skills will come in handy with the upcoming survival training in the tenth grade. The afternoon ended with laughter and cheers as if the students were joining each other in offline lessons.
