Grade 9-10: Lecture on Critical Thinking

May 6, 2020

On the afternoon of April 29th, 2020, the 9th and 10th graders attended an interesting online lecture given by four teachers on critical thinking. The first part was given byMr. Hodachok. He talked about the different views toward art in different cultures. Through these differences, he introduced the objectivity and subjectivity of art and inspired the students to think about the value of artwork. The second part was given by Mr. Sun. He introduced the idea of inductive reasoning, which is the idea behind the well-known scientific method that the students learned in their chemistry class. Moreover, through the example of the safety issues concerning genetically modified food, he also explained the weakness of inductive reasoning and introduced the empirical method as an alternative. The third part was given by Ms. Ye. She introduced the economic methodology and its application through examples of current affairs and decision making in our everyday life. The last part was given by Mr. Wu. He explained the importance and art of silence through John Cage’s famous production 4’33’’, giving the students a new view toward music.

Due to this CAS class, the students now have new insights on their previous point of views and perspectives. They have learned to think more critically and look at the essentials behind things and events.
