Pudong Campus Grades 1–5: Chinese Culture Week

April 29, 2020

As the flowers bloom in this beautiful season, the annual Chinese culture week has come once again. In a departure from previous years, from April 20 to April 24 of this year, students at SHSID Pudong Campus celebrated a special Chinese Cultural Week online. Let's review Chinese Culture Week and explore the beauty of Chinese culture together!

G1: Exploring the Forbidden City

The theme of Chinese Culture Week was to explore the mystery of Chinese culture. The first graders familiarized themselves with the Forbidden City, the greatest piece of traditional imperial architecture in China. They read stories and watched videos about it and even painted canvas bags with pictures related to this beautiful national treasure. Although students couldn’t meet in person, they were all glad to see their classmates in traditional Chinese costumes and share their creative works on Zoom!

G2: Exploring Chinese Museums

The second grade students explored the mystery of Chinese antiquities by visiting many national Chinese museums online. Through a series of interesting activities, all students learned about the beauty of ancient arts including ancient bronzes, Chinese characters, patterns and costumes, and more. Everyone was immersed in the profound and far-reaching Chinese culture!

G3: Exploring Chinese Poetry

Poetry is the reflection of culture. During this week, the third grade students strolled through the wonderful realm of Chinese poetry by reading, writing, and reciting various ancient Chinese poems. They also wore ancient Chinese costumes and tried Chinese calligraphy to explore the mystery and experience the splendid beauty of Chinese poetry.

G4: Exploring Historical Figures with Talents

The fourth grade students learned stories of famous poets and explored the history of surnames and traditional Chinese clothing. They also made several their own handcrafts, such as Chinese book marks, after learning about the art of ancient Chinese crafts. During Friday's zoom class meeting, grade four teachers and students met across time and space, wearing ancient costumes, and talking about the history of this wonderful country. Everyone was laughing and joyful.

G5: Exploring Traditional Chinese Food

During Chinese Culture Week, students of grade 5 enthusiastically showed their traditional Chinese talents! Dressed up in a traditional Chinese style, some of them wrote Chinese calligraphy, others recited Chinese poems, and some chose to perform elegant traditional dances. Those splendid performances infused our E-Learning with a vintage Chinese style. What’s more, grade 5 students enjoyed a 5-day lavish ‘feast’ of Chinese cuisine. ‘Guided’ by the famous Chinese gourmet Su Dongpo, students collected stories of well-known Chinese dishes and learned about the Eight Cuisines of China. Presented with Chinese dietary movies, literature, and history, students were fascinated and couldn’t wait to cook their own Chinese dishes!

At the same time, as students were independently exploring Chinese culture, we also had several fun online activities, including a Chinese song singing competition and a Chinese talent show. Students of all grades not only showed their wonderful singing skills and various Chinese talents but also improved their confidence and teamwork abilities. Although we couldn't get together in person to enjoy their performances, we’re all impressed by their amazing talents!

Chinese Culture Week has come to a successful end and brought an unprecedented new and refreshing experience to the students. Everyone actively participated in various online activities as a learner, experiencer, and disseminator of Chinese culture. We expect students continue to explore the mystery of Chinese culture in the future!
