Grades 1–3: An Amazing Journey through Chinese Culture Week

April 28, 2020

During last week’s exciting Chinese Culture Week, all the primary students from Grades 1 through 3 at SHSID Puxi Campus experienced an amazing journey exploring Chinese culture and civilization. The first graders have explored the great Forbidden City, the second graders have learned a lot about the fabulous collections in many big national museums, the third graders enjoyed the ancient Chinese poetry with great enthusiasm and participated in a lot of activities related to these elegant Chinese poems.

Throughout this week, the first graders learned a lot about Gu Gong’s history, architecture and culture. One of the fantastic activities was to decorate a white cloth bag with Gu Gong elements. Some students drew the magnificent palace and gates, some students drew the elegant queen and others drew different kinds of mythical creatures in Gu Gong. All the teachers were impressed by the creative designs made by the students.

The second graders started this week with the theme of "Exploring the Secrets of Collections". They took a marvelous “train” and “traveled” to ancient China. They have learned about Swiss beasts, inscriptions, ancient food utensils, and ancient patterns by reading books, and used what they learned to complete the restoration of ancient cultural relics, the elimination of ancient and modern food utensils, the creation of inscriptions, the production of masks with ancient patterns and many other tasks.

The third graders had experiential opportunities to speak, write, chant in poetic words, as well as to form a literature circle enjoying the spirit of ancient and modern works. In order to maintain the same level of fun and intrigue, the Chinese teachers worked hard together to bring forth a brand new feast of poetry and culture.Online, students were fascinated about LC activities such as finding the Chinese idioms represented by each of the given pictures, completing online “Feihualing” which required each player to come up with one poem that included certain words or topics and so on. Offline, students practiced hard-pen calligraphy and wrote about their favorite aspect of Chinese culture.

During the Zoom meeting on Friday, every student wore Chinese costumes of different ages and dynasties. All the students prepared a short introduction about the costume they were wearing and they all had a lot of fun sharing knowledge about Chinese dress culture.

This is a valuable week for every student of first to third grade, and it is very joyful and meaningful. We all believe that this Chinese Culture Week will definitely leave every student with an unforgettable impression about Chinese culture and civilization.
