Grade 9-10: Online Career Day

April 20, 2020

In the afternoon of April 15, students from Grades 9 and 10 participated in the "Career Day" activity. Twenty parents devoted precious time out of their already over-scheduled lives to share industrial knowledge, development prospects, success secrets, and suggestions for future career planning.

On the Zoom platform, online lectures allowed students and parents worldwide to interact with each other, breaking free from the limitation of distance and separation. There is no doubt that each and every student has learned and benefited a lot from this event.

Lectures ranged from "What is a professor?" to "How to successfully apply for a teaching post", and parents spoke about topics such as venture capital, entrepreneurship, prudent financial statistics, and management. Speakers ranged from lawyers with a strong sense of justice to doctors who innovate and psychologists who treat people’s mental health struggles. Lectures talked about the application of biotechnology, the development and challenges of brain science, the design and research of material science, beautiful industrial processing and production, and global supply chain and procurement. The lectures of the distinguished guests were brilliant and engaging, and students chose two of the lectures they found most interesting to listen to and study.

Professor Dai of Hong Kong Polytechnic University emphasized what it really means to be engaged in a career in education, inspiring students about a future in university teaching. Professor Dai began by asking students whether they have the enthusiasm for teaching and the ability to communicate with teachers and students. Are they confident that the educational profession is worth pursing? Professor Dai listed many advantages: being able to aid students in solving problems, following his own academic interests and sticking to them for life, having sufficient free and flexible time, being able to inspire and stimulate academic improvement, and being able to participate in more academic exchanges. However, his most important two points are to have a stable life and the ability to use intellectual property rights and enterprise cooperation to obtain greater benefits for all. Professor Dai’s sincere and thoughtful suggestions on systematic rules and gradual learning motivated students a lot.

Students who benefit from a global life are also very interested in industrial supply chain and global procurement. Mr. Bruce gave a detailed introduction of the supply chain in many top 500 companies, from global factories to customers worldwide. The curious students asked questions directed at current affairs such as the trade war and coronavirus. Mr. Bruce answered with his rich and plentiful experience and passion.

As the students attained much from this event, so did the lecturers. Career day is dedicated to the leaders from all walks of life with successful careers. Students are beyond grateful to have such a wonderful opportunity to explore their potential careers with the excellent guests. Any career can be rewarding. We hope students can be enthusiastic, focused, determined, and ultimately find a suitable career path unique to them.
