Pudong Grade 2: Welcome to My Game World
Can you hear the jungle drums beating? Since May, Pudong second graders have been learning all about the fantasy adventure of Jumanji in their English class. The story is expanded from a board game named 'Jumanji'.
In the world of Jumanji, the main characters, Alan and Sarah, encounter fantasy scenes, face one adventure after another, and conquer countless challenges. They have to fight off giant mosquitoes and spiders, as well as lions, hunters, and even natural disasters! Although the students were in the classroom, their imaginations followed Alan and Sarah through their Jumanji world. By the time they got to the end of the story, everyone had a strong interest in the board game 'Jumanji'. Therefore, their English teachers encouraged them to make their own board games inspired by the movie novel they had just studied. Students worked diligently to produce game board designs, make game cards, rules, instructions, and produce excellent persuasive writing to persuade their classmates to play their game. When we saw the board games designed and created by the students, we were amazed by their imagination—their work was way better than expected! From military based games to forest and sea themed board games, the students brought different worlds to life and were able to share them with one another.
Students were able to come up with some fantastic ideas such as using recycled materials, including animal facts in their cards, and allowing students to use a variety of rules/characters. During English class, they presented their board games to the class and the rest of the kids eagerly waited to have another amazing adventure in each of their own game worlds.
