Primary School Chinese Culture Week: Grade 2 Traditional Games and Shadow Puppet

In March 28th and 29th, Grade 2 students played traditional Chinese games and learned about Chinese shadow puppet and colored shadow puppet shows.

There were 5 games: Wooden Child, Tail Game, Drum Pass, A Little Black Fish, and Watching Shadow Puppets. Students consumed lots of energy during the Tail Game, and their faces turned red. The ‘tail’ was a handkerchief. They ran everywhere to tweak others’ tails. The group that tweaked the most number of tails was the winner. Wooden Child tested students’ speed and composure. The object of A Little Black Fish is to stick a black fish into the eye of a red fish. Even though kids did not need to move when they were playing Drum Pass, they still felt quite excited. The children were all very quiet while watching the shadow puppets. Their parents carried out the puppet show, which was about social change and progress.

Before coloring their own shadow puppets, the teachers introduced the history of Chinese shadow puppets, famous characters, and the steps of making your own shadow puppets. The students also watched some related videos. The teachers gave students many kinds of puppets, such as cartoon characters and other kinds of animals. While they colored-in, the students also learned how to share pigments, help their friends change clean water, and tidy up their tables altogether. At the end of the activity, the kids had produced brilliant puppets of their own.

Although traditional games are not as popular as digital games, students still had a wonderful time. The students had fun during these games, and didn’t risk any damage to their eyesight! And even better, they learned more about Chinese traditional history and enhanced their craft skills and teamwork.
