Buzz…. Here Comes the Spelling Bee
Buzz…. Here Comes the Spelling Bee
Once again, our annual Scripps Spelling Bee has buzzed its way over. This is the second time our school has participated in this competition. The first, school-wide round started last Friday, Feb. 22nd, and the top eighteen contestants were chosen to compete in the school championship round, which took place on Friday, March 1st. Before the competition started, all the contestants were focusing on testing each other spelling bee word. They ranged from sixth grade to eighth grade, and there was also a special guest from fifth grade! Following a loud, clear introduction by the pronouncer of the competition, Ms. Carte, the contestants walked up the stage with nervous and excited steps. Then, a series of word pronouncing and spelling began. The judges listened carefully to each speller, and with every letter being spelled out, the audience waited with bated breath. The crowd broke into loud cheers whenever the spellers correctly spelled a complicated word. There were also loud “awww”s, especially when the fifth grader got out. We had wonderful spellers this time, and the competition lasted for more than 10 rounds! When it came to the final two, many students of the audience had to, unfortunately, leave to catch their school buses. The competition was already intense enough, but the final two heightened the tension as they battled for numerous rounds. No one seemed to be able to win the other. The results still came out anyway, with Ian from 8(11) taking the champion place, Emma from 7(4) coming in second, and Kye from 8(11) being third. They will compete in the next round of spelling bee, which is the China round!
