High School Math: Good News from Duke Math Meet

June 6, 2024

From May 31 to June 2, 2024, a team of six ninth and tenth graders from SHSID showcased their mathematical prowess at the Duke Math Meet China held at Duke Kunshan University.

The Duke Math Meet (DMM) is a well-known mathematics competition for high school students held at Duke University each year since 2005. For the first time, Duke Math Meet officially entered China this year, bringing together a pool of talented local and international students across China for a fierce battle.

A series of rounds were held over the three days, including the team round, power round, individual round, and relay round. Aside from these main rounds, a poster presentation was held in which students presented posters about their own chosen math topics.

Out of the 30 selected teams, the SHSID team distinguished themselves by clinching several top honors. The team won the best verbal expression prize, the best poster presentation award and scored first place in the relay round. Additionally, five students from the team achieved the top 10% of individual rankings, a remarkable feat, as only 17 individuals out of about 200 students received this recognition. Lu, a grade 10 student, secured third place in the individual round after winning the tiebreaks.

The students competed, learned, and exchanged experiences with talented peers from across China at Duke Kunshan University, leaving a lasting impression of SHSID students' excellence. We wish them to continue achieving outstanding results in the future, carrying their passion and interest for mathematics.
