Grade 11 Assembly: Falling in Love with Gardening

June 3, 2024

On May 30, Joy from class 11(2) delivered a presentation during a school assembly, sharing her journey and experiences with gardening and growing vegetables. She began her talk by recounting how her interest in gardening was sparked. Joy started helping a neighbor tend to their garden after the neighbor's grandmother, who used to care for it, moved away. This initial exposure led her to discover a passion for gardening. She spoke about the steps involved in restoring the garden, from weeding and preparing the soil to selecting and planting new crops, then showed pictures comparing the garden spaces before and after her work.

Joy went on to describe how she developed an interest in cultivating specific varieties of tomatoes and strawberries from seeing a tomato cultivar uniquely named “Rebel Starfighter”. She decided to grow that variety along with many other tomato plants after the initial discovery, gradually adding more and more plants to her garden.

Beyond the practical aspects of gardening, Joy touched upon the personal and community benefits she gained from her hobby. She explained how gardening enhanced her sense of community, as she often shared her produce with neighbors and friends. This act of giving not only fostered stronger relationships within her community but also provided her with a profound sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. She also felt she has learned a substantial amount of technical knowledge from reading about vegetable farming practices. Lastly, Joy ended her speech by encouraging those who may be interested to pick up the hobby of gardening and reaching out to her to get started.
